Railroad Safety (continued)

What was originally started as a wake-up blog has taken a sideline to emphasize Railroad Safety as it seems to be of great importance lately (IMHO).

The post on Railroad Safety was getting too long with all the addons and updates, so I started a new one with the rebirth of the Norfolk & Western J class 611. There will be many railfans along her path as she starts her third career. There are not enough words to describe her awesomeness, so I'll just include some links to sites, articles and videos so you can see for yourself,

The main thing is Safety. Pay attention and keep your distance.

The J 611 Story

First baby steps in 2015. VIDEO

This may not be as exciting as the 100 mph photo runbys, but the J-611 takes her first baby steps since her restoration. With a successful test fire in her firebox, the J moved under her own power for the first time in 20 years and 153 days. After two years of work, The "Queen of Steam" starts her third career. If you're a Foamer, you'll appreciate this.

And Trains Win Everytime

July 18, 2015

The crash occurred in New Paris, Indiana July 18 2015 no one was injured, The limo was attempting to drive over the crossing but was stuck on the tracks. This is the only video about this accident, when the limo got hit by the train I personal shot this video,
Copyright by Studio Noe Productions (Norman Noe) All Rights Reserved.

This video of a train barreling into a limo in Indiana is what makes the internet so amazing and so ridiculous at the same time. A white Chrysler 300 stretch limo became stranded on the tracks over the weekend while carrying a group of teens celebrating a birthday in Elkhart, IN. Everyone was able to get out of the limo before the train collided, WNDU reports, and one of the passengers apparently whipped out their cell phone to capture the scene on video.

Some bystanders tried to signal to the locomotive before impact, but it was too late. The limo was dragged hundreds of feet down the track. Fortunately, no one was injured in the crash, though the car was pretty clearly totaled and the tracks and train sustained plenty of damage.

Limos aren't the only vehicles in danger of getting stuck on train tracks. Earlier this year a pickup truck somehow became stranded, or was possibly left, on a commuter rail line in California. Five people were injured and the train derailed in that crash. The small Louisiana town of Mer Rouge seems to attract train collisions, with three or four crashes happening in the last few years. Most recently, a semi became stuck on the tracks in Mer Rouge, causing the train to derail and injuring the conductor and engineer of the train.

Railroad track trespassing killed 526 people last year

“As a culture and as a country, we simply have not yet accepted that trains and railroad operations are inherently dangerous,” Sarah Feinberg, the Federal Railroad Administration’s acting administrator, said at the National Transportation Safety Board’s Trains and Trespassing: Ending Tragic Encounters forum, webcast from Washington.

Man hit, killed by train in Newport News Monday April 20

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police confirm a man was hit by a CSX train in Newport News Monday night and killed by the impact.
The incident happened around 8:45 p.m. just north of the Denbigh Boulevard Bridge, near the intersection with Jefferson Avenue. Newport News police spokeswoman Holly McPherson said a group of people were walking along the railroad tracks when the incident happened.
“One of the individuals in the group mentioned that a train was coming and the next thing they knew the male was struck by the CSX train,” Holley said.
The man who was hit was identified as 24-year-old Stanley Bernard Smith, Jr. of Newport News.
Police say the investigation revealed Smith along with four other people were walking down the railroad tracks heading towards Old Courthouse Way when the group noticed a train was coming in their direction. The four individuals exited the tracks and one of them yelled to Smith to get off the tracks, but Smith continued walking down the tracks and was struck.
Alcohol on the part of Smith is believed to be a contributing factor in this incident, say police.
Kaitlyn Barrett, with CSX corporate communications said the train, with three locomotives and five cars, was traveling from Newport news to Richmond.
Train traffic in the area has been temporarily suspended as police and CSX representatives investigate the scene.

The 55-year-old driver of a Toyota Prius told police officers that she made too wide of a turn when she was backing out of a nearby driveway. The car's wheels went off the roadway and got stuck on the railroad tracks.
The driver got out of the car before the train hit it.
Twenty passengers were on the train at the time.

Operation Lifesaver, North Carolina Division has begun posting a list of photographers who insist on taking illegal photographs on railway tracks.

When I went to the page to post it in my blog, I got this ->

Apparently, somebody who made it on the list complained and they had to take it down.

Wait. My friend just sent me another link. It doesn't include the photographers' names or studios, but there are photos. If they are still on the Internet, they can be searched.

Recent News and Articles on Rail Safety

I posted a comment on my Facebook Wall and somebody alerted the guilty party and she sent me a nastygram.

There was no disclosure or preface, so how was I supposed to know if this was an illegal act or not? There are no abandoned rails anywhere near her city so I assume these are active by the way they look. I invited her to clarify or enlighten me, but there was no response.

Libel means to publish in print (including pictures), writing or broadcast through radio, television or film, an untruth about another which will do harm to that person or his/her reputation, by tending to bring the target into ridicule, hatred, scorn or contempt of others.

BRIGHTON, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a 23-year-old man was wearing earphones and walking with his back to an oncoming Amtrak passenger train when he was struck and killed last week in a Rochester suburb.
Police in the town of Brighton told local media Monday that it appears the earphones prevented Garrett Magee from hearing the train that was approaching at 76 mph last Friday afternoon as he walked on the tracks in his hometown.
...

Officials say the westbound train dragged Magee for about a quarter of a mile before its crew brought it to a stop.
Police say Magee typically walked along the tracks to get to work. Official say he was killed in an area that is prohibited for pedestrian traffic.

Variety.com - Midnight Rider Accident Still Resonates One Year Later

Background from Wikipedia.org

==================================================================
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Authorities broke a promise to grant a filmmaker immunity from prosecution when they charged her with crimes in a fatal train collision during shooting of a movie about singer Gregg Allman, the woman's attorneys said.
Hillary Schwartz was working as an assistant director on the ill-fated Midnight Rider movie Feb. 20 when a freight train plowed into the crew on a railroad bridge spanning the Altamaha River in rural Wayne County. The crash killed Sarah Elizabeth Jones, a 27-year-old camera assistant from Atlanta, and injured six other crewmembers.

Ask yourself this one question....
What if you could have saved someone’s life but didn’t?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Rules for shooting on or near railroad tracks call for railroad personnel to be present and for stringent safety measures beyond that. On a bridge, those protections would include fall protection and safety harnesses. Rules are even more stringent when a production wants to put an obstruction on the tracks. 'Midnight Rider' was filming a dream sequence on a railroad trestle and had put a hospital bed on the tracks when a train arrived too quickly for the crew to clear the tracks and escape the bridge."
